Beginning June 17, 2010, the State of West Virginia will implement a mail-in rebate program to help residents replace older, inefficient appliances with Energy Star® qualified appliances, according to the state's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) website.
The program is one of 56 state energy-efficient appliance rebate programs, known as Cash for Appliances, which are being set up in the U.S. and six U.S. territories with the help of federal stimulus money. West Virginia will receive about $1.7 million of the nearly $300 million in stimulus funding available nationwide from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
Will WV Consumers be able to Increase Their Rebates?
To increase rebate amounts for Energy Star® clothes washers and dishwashers, West Virginia consumers can purchase models more efficient than the current Energy Star® level. In the case of these ultra-efficient appliances, each appliance must be labeled as Energy Star® to qualify for a rebate.
West Virginia consumers must purchase Energy Star® qualified appliances from participating West Virginia retailers and are also required to provide proof of residency and proper recycling of replaced appliances.
When Does the Program Begin and Will It be Retroactive?
West Virginia Consumers must purchase Energy Star® qualified appliances during the West Virginia Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program timeframe beginning on June 17, 2010. The rebates will not be retroactive and purchases made prior to the program launch date will not be eligible to receive rebates.
How Much Are the Rebates in WV?
- Clothes Washers (7/1/09 Criteria – Modified Energy Factor ≥ 1.8; WF ≤ 7.5) $50
- Clothes Washers (1/1/11 Criteria – Modified Energy Factor ≥ 2.0; WF ≤ 6.0) $75
- Dishwashers (8/11/09 Criteria – ≤ 324 kWh/year and ≤ 5.8 gallons per cycle) $50
- Dishwashers (7/1/11 Criteria – ≤ 307 kWh/year and ≤ 5.0 gallons per cycle) $75
- Room Air Conditioners (Energy Efficiency Rating – 10% greater than Federal standard) $20
- Freezers (10% better than Federal standard) $20
- Refrigerators (20% better than Federal standard) $100
The required efficiency level is more stringent than the Energy Star® level and not all Energy Star® qualified models are eligible for rebates.
